"Navigating Education's Ever-Changing Landscape: New Teachers Shaping the Future"

Dear Future Educators,

Warm congratulations to each of you for nearing the completion of your bachelor’s programme. as you stand on the threshold of a rewarding career in education, the Jamaica Teaching Council extends a warm and heartfelt welcome to you. Education is continuously evolving, and as new teachers, you play a vital role in shaping the future of learning. You are encouraged to embrace change, adapt to new challenges, and be innovative in your teaching practices. You are significant in the education system, and your potential to positively impact students and society is immeasurable.
 
In line with the recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Youth, we are pleased to announce that Cabinet, through Decision No. 27/06 – 17, approved the Beginning Teacher Mentorship Policy. This approval signifies implementing a mandatory mentorship programme for all beginning teachers and teachers returning to the profession after a five-year hiatus. Your participation is a significant step in ensuring the continuous improvement of teaching standards in Jamaica.

Your decision to embark on this noble journey of shaping the future through education is commendable, and we are here to provide you with the support and guidance you need as you transition into the teaching profession. We appreciate your dedication and enthusiasm in completing the required documentation for the Mentoring and Induction of Beginning Teachers 2023/2024 programme.
 

Here are some essential points to keep in mind:

  1. Certification Requirements:* To complete the programme in April 2024, you must accumulate 80 out of 100 points. Completing his initial form, with all the relevant information for Phase 1, will earn you 10 points toward this goal.
  2. Phase 1 – Individual Preparation (10 Marks):** Before completing the form, please prepare the following items for upload by January 15, 2024:
       – Join your Google Classroom https://rb.gy/j657a
       – Create a Google Site (here’s a guide: [Google Site Tutorial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV7l0PBZCEE)) and upload it in the designated section.
       – Create a Professional YouTube channel (guide: [YouTube Channel Setup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG4CE-JOXVU)) and provide the link/URL.
       – Establish a LinkedIn account (tutorial: [LinkedIn Account Creation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh5eDSMPvjE)).
       – Prepare a professional headshot photograph for upload. This image will be featured in the 2024 e-magazine, reflecting your commitment to professionalism.
  3. Phase 2: Synchronous Overview (Zoom):** On February 9, we will kick off Phase 2 with a synchronous session via Zoom.https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86088431708?pwd=qx0IFfU9FUq5hTYY90V8XMK7Mb649N.1

    Passcode: BT2024  This session will provide an overview of the programme and introduce you to your mentor/facilitator.
  4. Phases 3 and 4 – Group and Asynchronous Learning:**

       – Phase 3: Over eight weeks, from February to April 2024, we will engage in group sessions every Tuesday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. During this phase, you will have ample opportunities to interact with course materials and progress at your own pace. Expect to collaborate with esteemed educators such as Dr. Winsome Gordon, CEO of JTC, guest facilitators, Teacher Registration Staff, Subject Associations, and more.
       – Phase 4: This phase is designed for asynchronous learning via Google Classroom. There will be no live lectures or oral presentations; you will access course materials and recordings as needed for your reflections       

  5. Phase 5: A one-day synergy conference will be held at the Mico University College Gymnasium on February 16, 2024, from 8 am to 4 pm.
